Houghton Grammar opened in July 1926 and was located between Durham & Hetton Roads. In 1968 or 1969, the school changed its name from Houghton Grammar to Houghton-le-Spring Seconday School. The Secondary Modern in Hall Lane then changed its name to Bernard Gilpin School.
The school crest (as seen on the boys' blazers) was adopted by the new Houghton Kepier School, which opened in the late 1980s.
